Executive Board

Urban Refuge is run by a team of young women, all under the age of 22, who have dedicated themselves to social good and innovative entrepreneurship.

Raina Kadavil is an Events Marketing Specialist at BOARD International and a senior at Boston University studying International Relations. She is the co-founder of a nonprofit called Global Ambassadors, the founder of the New York-based news series REACT News, the author of the novel “The Voice of Thunder,” and a Bollywood dancer. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Relations Review and the founder and Director of Students for the United Nations. She loves traveling and has worked in the United Nations in addition to London, Sydney, and Beijing, and has explored 31 countries overall. She has done a great deal of research including designing and conducting an independent three-year study on climate change’s impact on horseshoe crab populations, and is assisting with the research end of Urban Refuge. Raina has been recognized for her work by the Coca-Cola Foundation, Zonta International, the Walt Disney Company, and Claes Nobel, among others. In her free time, you can find her lost in a good book or on a hiking trail.

Stephanie Garcia is a senior studying International Relations. She currently works at an ed-tech company and has a background in researching education reform. Throughout her professional experience, she has developed a passion for inclusion in technology and its ability to be utilized as a resource for social impact.

Ada Mesci is a first year student from Turkey. She is in the College of Arts and Sciences studying psychology. In Turkey, she volunteered for two years with a group that visited the UNHCR in order to provide awaiting refugees with food and clothing. By the time she came to Boston University, she was determined and passionate about working as an activist for the refugee crisis. Urban Refuge offered her the perfect opportunity to do just that. Therefore, she will be fulfilling the duties of the Outreach Intern of the organization this semester.

Makenzie is a sophomore at Boston University pursuing a BA in International Relations and a minor in Arabic. Her concentrations within the International Relations field include Foreign Policy and Security Studies and a regional focus in the Middle East and North Africa. Through her past experiences and coursework including a German student-exchange program, a rigorous UN Peacekeeping Operations course and opportunities to learn directly from military leaders and civil servants, Makenzie has developed an interest in the policy-making process, intelligence, diplomacy, negotiations, national defense and Middle Eastern studies.
